EMP4 CCC malfunctions

I finally got around to shooting my new EMP4 CCC. I only ran 150 rounds of PMC Bronze 115 grain FMJ ammo through it, but I experienced 3 different types of malfunctions, multiple times. I used the same magazine, as well.

A few times, the nose of the bullet would nose dive into the feed ramp, not allowing the round to chamber. I also had the slide not lock back on the last round a few times. The last malfunction, was the slide wouldnt always go all of the way back into battery, and I had to bump the rear of the slide, to get it to do so.

I called Springfield, and they recommeded trying a different magazine, and a different type of ammo. I have not had time to do either of these yet.

I was curious to hear from those of you that have had a similar experience. Thanks a lot!

First post on Springfield forum guys..

I have the emp 4" 40 Champion. Purchased in May and right out of the box it jammed. I had some sh!tty reloads from 20 yrs ago and they were set into case to deep. My Glock and Walther fed them with a couple jams. Switched to fmj federal, Winchester, pmc and it (emp) still jammed. Cleaned gun and contacted SA. I will say that they were attentive and sent a shipping label but another lady did tell me to run some more ammo thru it. Off and on this summer I've fed the beast and she has gotten better. About 300 rounds into the emp and will say it is a beast. Accurate, decent trigger etc. It's been quite some time since I've shot a metal weapon and was pleasantly surprised. I'm still watching the ammo I feed it and tracking any hiccups. If I do send it back I would have warranty work done but pay for the trigger to be polished up some. I hope you get good results from them!

Got my C3 Wednesday and finally got to the range today. Put 50 rds of MagTech and 50 of Fiocci (both 115gr) down range w/ no issues at all. Love the mild recoil and sight picture. Mag release harder than hell to engage, but mags spit right out when I do. They need a lot of encouragement to go into the gun. All three seem to catch about 2/3 of the way inserted. Hoping that will smooth out. LGS has MagTech 115gr on sale for $8.50 a box. Planning on running a couple hundred through this weekend.

Thanks guys, for sharing how your guns are functioning. I'm always interested to hear about it.

As an update on my end, it has now been over four weeks since Springfield received the gun back, and I haven't heard a word. I'm almost ready to buy the 3" EMP, while I wait to get this one back...

I just purchased a CCC Emp 4 last Saturday. I cleaned it twice so far and ran 300 rds through it and have had so many ftf I lost count. I have the same issue where you have to push it with your thumb to get it to finish loading. I took it apart and buffed the rail and everywhere there is friction. I lubed it and no difference. I have no confidence in this gun and am extremely disappointed in it. After reading the comments I feel like this was a poor purchase. I will contact Springfield but it sounds like they are not fixing the issue and don't communicate well after reading the comments here.:(

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Out of curiousity, what are the first couple serial numbers on the frame of your gun? As far as customer service, Springfield always seems to get good marks for that, so I wouldn't be worried about that. Both times that my gun has shipped back, I have had a prompt email that included a tracking number, and also what they did to the gun.

I haven't called for any updates, so I'm sure that is why I haven't heard anything out of them, since they received it. I look at it like this... they will send it back when they are happy with it. I had hoped that they were happy with it, after the first two trips back, but apparently not. I'm kind of like you though, my confidence in this gun is lacking now, and that is not a good thing. I had a similar confidence issue with my Sig P938, but that was solved after one trip back to the manufacturer. In this case, lets hope that the third time is a charm...

I debated buying a Dan Wesson 01870 Bobtail in 9mm but chose this because of the savings and good things I have read, but now I am regretting it and wishing I would have went for the Dan Wesson instead. I have no confidence in this gun at all. It literally ftf's on 2 rounds at least on each mag and I tried all 3 mages several times with 3 different types of ammo. I also sat and did simulated "racking" sliding the rail back and forth close to 500 times to get it to wear in and no difference. I am going to call Springfield and request they make this right

My serial # is in the 57xxx's, so your gun is 5,000 or so newer than mine, in terms of frame production. Don't hesitate to contact them, and send it back. They should be very accomodating. Just be prepared to be patient, and potentially have to send it back more than once. Hopefully, that won't be the case, but it sure has been with mine. I have also read a lot of good things about Dan Wesson guns, but have never shot one. They are made here by CZ.

Good luck man. Keep us posted!

This gun is the biggest P.O.S. I have ever bought in my life. I completely disassembled, buffed, cleaned and lubed it inside and the magazines feed lips also I buffed and cleaned. I now have a 9mm live rd jammed in the barrel that will not eject as the rail will not slide back to eject it. I have the safety on and now a live loaded gun in my house that is unusable. I called Springfield today and the lady said they have had No problems with these guns and I told her I am reading everywhere on the internet about the FTF issues and she acted like she had no idea. I was emailed a return label but how the hell can I return a live loaded gun to the manufacturer?

Again, sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm not sure of the best way to remove your live round, but definitely don't ship it back like that. Surely you can find a good way, or hopefully someone will have a good recommendation.

On the otherhand, I called Springfield today. They received my gun back on July 27th. They said that they called me on August 9th, but didn't leave a message, because my voicemail wasn't set up. So, here we are, 20 days later, and I haven't received an email, or even a letter. If they tried to call me again, I wasn't home when they did, and they didn't have my cell number at the time. So who knows how long it would have been, before I talked to them again, if I hadn't called today??!!

I was told that a few shooters ran over 100 rounds through the gun, and that they could not get the gun to malfunction. Needless to say, no further modifications were made to the gun by them. I let them know that I would be willing to accept the gun back one more time, and that I would try running Winchester white box through it, since that is generally what I plink with, although I haven't ran any of it through the gun yet.

They let me know that if I still wasn't happy with the gun, that we could then talk about replacing the gun, or even exchanging it for something else that I like. I asked if they could possibly smooth the action out some, or lighten the trigger a bit, before sending it back. The representative said that he would have someone look at it, but that it wouldn't be the custom shop. He also informed me that they are on a complete shut-down this week, and that it would be next week before the gun would ship back out.

Again, still playin' the waitin' game...

Sorry to hear for your delays, has to be frustrating. Hopefully it is right when you receive it back.

I stopped at the local gun shop tonight. We went in to the range and he took a rubber hammer, held the slide and tapped on the back of the grip and it dislodged. I said screw it and left it there. They have a master gunsmith there and he is going to go through it and get it right. I don't trust Springfield to fix it right after the hassle you have gone through. I trust Jeff the gunsmith to get it smooth and running like it should. May cost me $50-$75 but it will be worth it

Glad you got it unloaded! If that's all that it'll cost to get your gun runnin', it sounds like money well spent to me! Good luck, and again, keep us posted!

Heck! I've had to do that exact same thing...5 times! Of course, all of my issues were with my own hand loads. Any and all factory ammo has run thru mine (not the CCC model, but the 4" Match Champion) without a hiccup.
The rounds that stuck in my EMP all fit into a go/no-go cartridge checker die, and they all cycled thru any of up to 10 other 9mm pistols. Only the EMP had/has a chamber so tight, that it didn't like any of my correctly (?) sized hand loads. I ended up buying an undersized sizing die...and all my problems went away.
I'm glad you got yours freed up. I think that the chambers are too tight on these models. Your smith should figure that out and get you running perfectly.

I am entirely too impatient. I ordered the 3" EMP in 9mm today. I hope this one decides to run right out of the box...
I'm looking for one also None in my area of Florida. I would like to know how you like it and how its functioning for you.

Still can not find an EMP 4 in Nine for the wife. She has a LWC on order and its been a month.

I will post, as soon as I receive it, and get to shoot it. Funny thing, is that the place I ordered from only ships handguns Monday through Wednesday, and they are out of state, but only 2, or so, hours away. So, I have to wait until next week for it to get here. I registered for the free gear. It just seems weird to do that, and not even have the gun in my possession! But, today was the last day this year to purchase a gun, and take advantage of Springfield's free offer.

Oh well. Another 1911 added to the collection. Not a bad thing...

By the way, I have seen the gun you are looking for on Gun Broker. $799 is the cheapest I have seen it, which is a hell of a buy!

Well, it just so happens that my 3" EMP 9mm showed up at the gun shop today. Between me and the wife, we fired 101 rounds of Winchester white box 115 FMJ through it. The gun ran completely flawless for me. The wife fired 20 of these rounds, and had one failure to go all the way into battery. She hasn't shot much, so I will chalk it up to limp wristing. Regardless, I am totally happy with the functionality of this gun. What I am not happy about, right out of the box, is that the finish is coming off the slide stop. I'm apparently not having the best of luck with EMP's, at this point...

As another update, I received shipping conformation that my CCC model is on it's way back again, and I should have it Friday. According to the invoice, no alterations were made to the gun this time. It says that they ran 100 rounds through it with no problems. I'm hoping that this gun just had growing pains while breaking in. I hope to shoot it this weekend, and see if it will run for me. I will post back and let you guys know it turned out...

I got my EMP4 CCC back today, and ran a hundred rounds through it. The first 50 were Winchester white box. The gun functioned flawlessly. The second 50 was the PMC Bronze again. I experienced 2 or 3 more failures to go all the way into battery.

We have pretty well decided that this gun just doesn't like the PMC fodder. You can see light scrapes, or rubbing marks on the shell case, where the rounds try to chamber. We used a black Sharpie, and colored a case. You could see where the black had scraped off the case, right at the top of the feed ramp, where it meets the throat of the barrel. Springfield has already opened up the throat of this barrel a bit, so I am curious to see how things measure out.

A buddy of mine is goin' to mic a live round of Winchester white box, and a once fired case. He is goin' to do the same the with the PMC Bronze. I'm curious to see how the rounds compare. I'm not sure how long it will take him to get around to measuring them, but when he does, I will post the findings here.

As I had suspected, when all else fails, stick with Winchester white box!
