    Black Talon is a brand of hollow point pistol and rifle ammunition introduced in 1991 by Winchester, primarily intended for law enforcement and personal defense use.

    { I personally own 10 boxes of Winchester Black Talon in .45 ACP and 9mm...6 boxes of .38 Special and .357 Magnum...and 10 boxes of .44 Magnum.

    Bought them up at local gun shows as I seen them after the two "incidents"...listed below: }

    The 1st shooting which brought critical media attention to Black Talon was by gunman Gian Luigi Ferri, who used Black Talon and other ammunition to shoot 15 people at a San Francisco law office in 1993; nine of whom died...

    The 2nd incident was used by the gunman Colin Ferguson in the 1993 Long Island RR Massacre...

    In 1993 Winchester removed the ammunition from public sale, but at no time was Black Talon ammunition uniformly prohibited by US law.

    They were later revived by Winchester ( without the Evil Black Oxide coating ) as the Winchester Ranger SXT Series...still had the evil "talons" too.

    I have a box of the 9mm that is put up for a conversation piece. I also keep two mags full of the modern version(ranger) in +p for my .45. A buddy shot some into a 55 gallon drum of water and they make some beautiful copper flowers, with nice sharp petals!

    That is an interesting story. It also makes about as much sense as removing black Ford vehicles from the automotive market due to an idiot using a black Ford to run over someone.

    It would probably have to happen twice before they would do that. ;) :D

    How long do you think the original Black Talons will remain reliably functional if kept in a standard ammo storage box?

    Properly stored (indefinitely).
    I have AK and M16 rounds from the 60's that still go bang every time.

    I have several 50 cal sealing ammo cans that I put large packs of desiccants for drying in and they seem to work fine.

    Here's some good reading on storage.

    Taking the ammo off of the market was liberal bias. The good part is that others developed similar but better ammo.
