This is purely subjective, but I owned two Glocks, one being a 19, and neither ever felt good to me. They seemed bulky and awkward in my hand, didn't point well and I never shot them as accurately as handguns from other manufacturers. I attribute that to the design of their grip and its angle to the bore. I no longer own either of them. My Xdm feels much better and that reflects in the way I shoot it. I would suggest you handle them at a local gun store or range and judge for yourself how you like them.

I don't have a 17 or a 19, but I've got a 23 (same gun as 19 but in 40). I prefer the XDM because of the grip safety, grip angle, and the sights. The grip safety is an unobtrusive extra safety step that I prefer. I've never liked the grip angle of a Glock. The sights- my preference is fiber optic front, and the U shaped rear is easiest for me to regain the sight picture. My 2 XDM's were the first two guns that I've owned where I had not inclination to make changes.
Both are tested and reliable, so it comes down to features and aesthetics for me.

I've never been a Gluck guy or an XD "Grip Zone" guy, but in 10mm, I have settled on the XDM/XDME platform over the G20/G40 platform because of the superior OOB trigger, better sights and excellent grip angle that allows for a very good and natural POA for me. I think all the on-board nannys of the XD line are off-putting. LCI, striker indicator, trigger dingus, grip safety, come on man! ENOUGH! However, most other 10mm semi-auto polymer firearms have proven to have ongoing reliability issues, none of which have materialized in the main in the XDMs and Glucks. So of the two, I'll stick with my XDMs. The similarities I describe in my 10mms are applicable to the 9mm comparison as well.
