Hello all, 1st post here.

I picked up a new SA-35 back in January (ordered online). While dry cycling it, I noticed the trigger rebound is VERY weak, with practically no audible or tactile reset. This is my 1st “Hi Power” so I showed it to some gun buddies who have owned / own Hi Powers, and they all agreed it felt very weak. I decided to not worry too much about it before actually shooting it, then I’d assess.

Well, last weekend I shot it for the 1st time, and yup, it kinda sucks. The trigger break is great, but the reset is awful. You’ve got to let it allll the way forward, which I’m fine with (I’ve shot plenty of double-action handguns over the years), but the return pressure is so weak w/ almost zero feedback on the reset. While trying to string together rapid shots I short stroked the trigger and subsequently pulled a dead trigger more than once, as did some other shooters with me.

Anyway, as mentioned this is my 1st Hi Power so I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I certainly wasn’t expecting a Glock-like “click” on the reset or anything like that, but the lack of return pressure is concerning, especially since several other Hi Power owners also felt it was pretty weak.

Brief research shows me that I could replace the trigger return spring w/ an “extra power” spring to increase that pressure (at the cost of a heavier trigger pull, which I’m OK with). I’m more than capable of doing that job myself and the cost of the spring is negligible. That said, should I just send it back to Springfield? It is a damn-near new gun. I’ve never dealt with their customer service before, and am a bit hesitant to send out my new gun just for them to say weeks later “Couldn’t replicate problem” or “Oh, that’s how Hi-Powers are supposed to be”, etc…

If anyone that has dealt w/ SA customer service or has had similar issues could weigh in, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Springfield customer service is excellent. I would call them and explain the problem and see what they say. I figure they'll send you a shipping label and take a look at it.
If you want to replace the spring and see what you think, that would be fine also. You can always put the stock spring back in and try Springfield if you're not satisfied with the results.

You are not alone. I’ve seen several YouTube videos from people who experienced what’s called ‘dead trigger’ where the trigger simply won’t reset at all and the gun becomes tied up. I don’t know if they thought to pull forward on the trigger to force it to reset, but the ones I saw said they had to cycle the slide and eject the round from the chamber to ‘fix’ it. They sent their guns back for repairs and they were satisfied with the results.

Shoot it some more and allow finger to come slightly off the
trigger after each shot. See if you get "used to it" and start
to master faster followup shots. Still don't like it, send
it to SA or replace with heavier spring.

I've read that when the mag disconnect was removed on the
original Hi Powers, a heavier spring was often used.

The more i read here about the SA35 and there are numerous posts here and on other forums i would now classify the SA35 as a "do not buy". Under nay circumstances.
It is about quality control before they are sold and dispatched, if near new there is NO send it back. It should never have left the factory..

Thx all for the replies. I was just about to order a heavier spring and go knockin out pins…. Then I decided to call SA and let them take a look for free before resorting to plan B. Not sure what, if anything, they’ll do, but I can live without it for a few + weeks. I bought it as nothing more than a range toy, and I’ve got plenty others :) I’ll report back once SA has gotten their hands on it.

On a related note, I was happy with the fact that when I called SA, I was speaking to a human within 30 seconds, who was extremely polite and helpful. I appreciated that blast from the past…
