EMP4 CCC malfunctions

I finally got around to shooting my new EMP4 CCC. I only ran 150 rounds of PMC Bronze 115 grain FMJ ammo through it, but I experienced 3 different types of malfunctions, multiple times. I used the same magazine, as well.

A few times, the nose of the bullet would nose dive into the feed ramp, not allowing the round to chamber. I also had the slide not lock back on the last round a few times. The last malfunction, was the slide wouldnt always go all of the way back into battery, and I had to bump the rear of the slide, to get it to do so.

I called Springfield, and they recommeded trying a different magazine, and a different type of ammo. I have not had time to do either of these yet.

I was curious to hear from those of you that have had a similar experience. Thanks a lot!

I debated buying a Dan Wesson 01870 Bobtail in 9mm but chose this because of the savings and good things I have read, but now I am regretting it and wishing I would have went for the Dan Wesson instead. I have no confidence in this gun at all. It literally ftf's on 2 rounds at least on each mag and I tried all 3 mages several times with 3 different types of ammo. I also sat and did simulated "racking" sliding the rail back and forth close to 500 times to get it to wear in and no difference. I am going to call Springfield and request they make this right
My serial # is in the 57xxx's, so your gun is 5,000 or so newer than mine, in terms of frame production. Don't hesitate to contact them, and send it back. They should be very accomodating. Just be prepared to be patient, and potentially have to send it back more than once. Hopefully, that won't be the case, but it sure has been with mine. I have also read a lot of good things about Dan Wesson guns, but have never shot one. They are made here by CZ.

Good luck man. Keep us posted!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Out of curiousity, what are the first couple serial numbers on the frame of your gun? As far as customer service, Springfield always seems to get good marks for that, so I wouldn't be worried about that. Both times that my gun has shipped back, I have had a prompt email that included a tracking number, and also what they did to the gun.

I haven't called for any updates, so I'm sure that is why I haven't heard anything out of them, since they received it. I look at it like this... they will send it back when they are happy with it. I had hoped that they were happy with it, after the first two trips back, but apparently not. I'm kind of like you though, my confidence in this gun is lacking now, and that is not a good thing. I had a similar confidence issue with my Sig P938, but that was solved after one trip back to the manufacturer. In this case, lets hope that the third time is a charm...

I just purchased a CCC Emp 4 last Saturday. I cleaned it twice so far and ran 300 rds through it and have had so many ftf I lost count. I have the same issue where you have to push it with your thumb to get it to finish loading. I took it apart and buffed the rail and everywhere there is friction. I lubed it and no difference. I have no confidence in this gun and am extremely disappointed in it. After reading the comments I feel like this was a poor purchase. I will contact Springfield but it sounds like they are not fixing the issue and don't communicate well after reading the comments here.:(

Thanks guys, for sharing how your guns are functioning. I'm always interested to hear about it.

As an update on my end, it has now been over four weeks since Springfield received the gun back, and I haven't heard a word. I'm almost ready to buy the 3" EMP, while I wait to get this one back...

Got my C3 Wednesday and finally got to the range today. Put 50 rds of MagTech and 50 of Fiocci (both 115gr) down range w/ no issues at all. Love the mild recoil and sight picture. Mag release harder than hell to engage, but mags spit right out when I do. They need a lot of encouragement to go into the gun. All three seem to catch about 2/3 of the way inserted. Hoping that will smooth out. LGS has MagTech 115gr on sale for $8.50 a box. Planning on running a couple hundred through this weekend.

First post on Springfield forum guys..

I have the emp 4" 40 Champion. Purchased in May and right out of the box it jammed. I had some sh!tty reloads from 20 yrs ago and they were set into case to deep. My Glock and Walther fed them with a couple jams. Switched to fmj federal, Winchester, pmc and it (emp) still jammed. Cleaned gun and contacted SA. I will say that they were attentive and sent a shipping label but another lady did tell me to run some more ammo thru it. Off and on this summer I've fed the beast and she has gotten better. About 300 rounds into the emp and will say it is a beast. Accurate, decent trigger etc. It's been quite some time since I've shot a metal weapon and was pleasantly surprised. I'm still watching the ammo I feed it and tracking any hiccups. If I do send it back I would have warranty work done but pay for the trigger to be polished up some. I hope you get good results from them!

Well, have had the CCC for two weeks. Took it out the day i bought it. Right out of the case and loaded the mags with Blazer brass. First mag, two failed to chamber. Next two mags. No problem. The rest of the session one more failed to chamber.

Took it home and finally cleaned and lubed the gun.

Took it out yesterday. Shot remanufactured ammo -124 grain. Local company half hour away. Not a single problem. Put over 100 rounds through it. So far so good, and got my approval and confirmation from Springfield that my mags will be 8-12 weeks yesterday.
Sorry to hear that you had issues with your gun, right out of the box. But, you were still in the break-in period. I'm glad to hear that it has gotten better for you, and I hope that you contine to have good, reliable luck with it.

The only update that I can give for my situation, at this point, is that Springfield has had my gun for three weeks now, today. I haven't heard anything out of them, and this is the longest period of time that they have had the gun, out of the three times that I have sent it back to them. Either they are possibly experiencing more returned guns at this point in the year, or hopefully they are taking a closer look at the gun that I returned, like I was hoping for.

I still wouldn't mind to purchase a 3" EMP, but I haven't decided whether or not to pull the trigger on that yet...

New guy anxiously awaiting your outcome. I plan on picking up, one of each next week. A CCC for me and LWT for the queen.

Well, I contacted Springfield this morning, and the gun is going back for the third time. I mentioned replacement, but wasn't offered it by them yet. I mentioned also smoothing out the action, and a trigger job, but the warranty only covers things that are wrong with the gun. Needless to say, I didn't try to argue with them. I just let them know my displeasure, and that if it doesn't run, after this trip back to them, that we can explore other options. I also mentioned that I would like the gun gone through with a fine-toothed comb this time. We will see what happens...
Hopefully the third time is a charm. Let us know when you get it back and how is runs.

I'm thinking that if they want me to send the gun back again, that a full treatment from the custom shop shouldn't be too much to ask for, right? Such as a trigger job, etc.? If the gun still malfunctions after that, then maybe I should be looking to the replacement route? Just thinkin' outloud...

What good is a trigger job if the gun still malfunctions? I would definitely ask to have it replaced. My experience with gun manufacturers is you have to ask for a replacement, they usually don't suggest it. I would simply say that your are a loyal Springfield customer and this particular EMP 4 CCC does not meet the performance standards that you expect from Springfield especially since it is a carry gun which you must rely on to protect your life and those of your family. How can they expect you to carry it if the damn thing malfunctions. That's totally unacceptable in my opinion. Just be firm with them and I am sure they will do the right thing. Good luck.

I doubt they'd use the same number, probably just scrap it and send you another 1. But they'll probably not want to replace it so,you may have to ask. I'm sure if you'd say "I want a replacement 1 or a refund",that they'd realize you were very unhappy and do 1 or the other.

I wouldn't even begin to know how replacing a firearm works, since I've never had to do it. I'm sure Springfield can tell me, but its ultimately up to them whether or not it needs/will be replaced. It makes me wonder if they destroy the gun, and issue you a new serial number, or make another new one, with the same number. ?? I'd be willing to bet that they will want me to send the gun back for a third time. If so, either the third time will be a charm, or I may have to explore other options...

My opinion is very simple. Replace the damn thing. I think you have been extremely patience and its now time for Springfield to stand behind their warranty. I would except nothing less.

I got the gun back Tuesday the 11th, and just got around to shooting it tonight. I only had time to run 50 rounds of PMC Bronze 115 grain FMJ through it.

I experienced two malfunctions. One was a failure to chamber, where basically only the nose of the bullet made it into the barrel. I had to eject the magazine, and then rack the slide, to clear this malfunction. And the other, was another failure of the slide to go all the way into battery, and I just had to tap the rear of the slide, for it to finish chambering.

It will probably be a couple weeks now, before I am able to contact Springfield, again, by phone. I guess that I would like to start hearing your opinions, at this point. Like I previously mentioned, they opened up the barrel throat this time, but they weren't able to fire the particular ammo that I am currently running through it. I continue to send the same original magazine that I have been using, back with the gun.

Needless to say, I am pretty bummed, and I can't even get FMJ ammo to reliably run through this gun, even after 350 rounds of my own shooting. I haven't even tried to run defensive loads through the gun yet, but I see no reason to, at this point.

I received an email today, letting me know that the gun is on it's way back from Springfield. They opened up the barrel throat this time. That was the only work performed to it, according to the invoice. I have heard that this can potentially make your group size a bit larger, but nothing major. But, if thats what it takes to make the gun run...
Please keep us posted on your progress.
